Tim Howard was the shootout hero as Everton held on to a penalty-kick victory over Juventus following a 1-1 draw in the Guinness International Cup at AT&T Park on Wednesday.
The USA international got two hands to Federico Peluso's sudden-death effort after Andrea Pirlo had missed a potentially match-winning spot-kick, after goals from Kevin Mirallas and Kwadwo Asamoah had levelled matters in normal time.
Juve featured some new faces in their line-up as strike duo Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente both started, while Roberto Martinez handed a start to 19-year-old John Stones as Phil Jagielka's defensive partner for the Toffees.
After a drab and goalless first half, Everton took a deserved lead when Victor Anichebe and Darron Gibson's good work in midfield allowed Mirallas to burst in from the right wing and score.
Juventus equalized with just 10 minutes remaining as Asamoah brilliantly thrashed Mirko Vucinic's cut-back into the top corner, leaving Howard with no chance of a save.
In the 90th minute, Everton had the best chance to win the match in normal time with Ross Barkley's swerving strike from long range forcing Marco Storari into an unorthodox save with his knees.
Storari then saved Everton's opening penalty to give Juventus the advantage in the shootout but, after a string of successful spot-kicks left Pirlo the chance to win it, he pulled his effort wide to ensure sudden-death penalties.
After successful efforts from Stones, Marco Motta and Bryan Oviedo, Howard got two hands to Peluso's effort and Everton claimed the win, sending them through to the last four.
