Ron Vlaar: Keen to make amends

Villa were thrashed 8-0 in the same fixture last season and were forced to battle for their Premier League survival for much of the campaign.

But confidence is high in the camp on the back of their 3-1 win at The Emirates on Saturday and Vlaar insists they will be out to make amends against Jose Mourinho's side in midweek.

"If you can win at the Emirates, of course it is a great start. We want to do it again on Wednesday now," he said.

"We all know (remember) what happened last year, so we want to put that to rest.

"We learnt a lot and we still have to learn a lot, but mentally we became a stronger team.

"We need everybody, all 25 players because it is a long season. The spirit is there in the group and that is the most important thing.

"You know when you play in eight days against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (at Villa Park on 24 August), that it could be a little easier.

"But it is the start of the season and nobody really knows a lot about each other, and what will happen from now."

Chelsea beat Hull 2-0 at home in their first game of the new season, which marked the return of Jose Mourinho to Premier League management.
