Aaron Hughes: Determined to keep his place in the Fulham side

The Northern Ireland international is currently suffering from a thigh injury and is a doubt for the weekend clash against West Brom at Craven Cottage.

However, he remains determined to regain his fitness in order to keep his place in the side, which he feels is under threat from new signing Fernando Amorebieta.

The Venezuelan, who joined the club in a summer switch from Athletic Bilbao, is ready to push the experienced Hughes for a starting role in the centre of defence alongside Brede Hangeland.

"You work hard to get yourself in the team," said the 33-year-old Hughes.

"There's a lot of competition for places. I'll do my best and try and keep the spot as long as I can.

"You have to embrace it (when new players come in). We're all in it together, and the competition keeps everyone on their toes and makes sure no one gets complacent.

"Fernando has looked quality in training and in the pre-season games. We're pretty strong with Brede, myself and Phil (Senderos)."
