Nigel Adkins: Will look to promote from within rather than bring in players on s

The Royals boss has used that market well in the past, with Scunthorpe and Southampton benefitting from short-term deals put in place during his tenure.

Adkins is, however, aware of the need to maintain stability and will not bring players in for the sake of it.

Instead, he will look to promote from within if he finds himself short in a particular area of the field.

Adkins told the Reading Post: "If we're going to get a loan in it would have to be a top, top player.

"If it would enhance the group, then that would be beneficial.

"But as a whole you try to deal with the players you've got unless something pops up and you've got a big injury problem and a youngster is not available to cover. Then you might have to dip into it."

On shunning loanees in favour of making the most of an academy at Reading that now has Category 1 status, Adkins added: "At Scunthorpe we got some young players, the likes of Jack Cork and Henri Lansbury.

"It benefitted them to come to us and they've gone on and done really, really well.

"At my previous club (Southampton) the first loan deal I got was Richard Chaplow and he was great for us and we took him on a permanent deal.

"But here, with Category 1 status, we've got our own youngsters, so we'll use our own. That's what they are there for."
